For the past 5 years the Tarrangower Cactus Control Group (TCCG) has received funding from the Mt. Alexander Shire Council to provide free disposal of Wheel Cactus plants at the Maldon Transfer Station. This is to make it easier and encourage our local community members to manually dig up and get rid of Wheel Cactus plants on their property, especially if they have just a small number of smaller sized plants.
This funding is for a defined amount ($500) per financial year. We’ve had such a great response to this opportunity this year that our funds have all been spent. Hence, we must advise that until the end of June, there is no more free disposal at the Maldon tip. You can still dispose of Wheel Cactus plants there but will need to pay for the volume of general waste (because they need to be buried to die!).
The TCCG has applied for ongoing funding to start again in July, but have not yet heard if their application is successful. Watch this space!
