The Tarrangower Cactus Control Group (TCCG) held an enlightening workshop and field trip last week, specifically for government land management organisations. Our main goals were to warn other regions in Victoria that Wheel Cactus is spreading like a ‘triffid’, and to share our knowledge and experience trying to eradicate this cactus from our own immediate environment.
The presentations given highlighted the serious threats posed by this noxious weed to the natural flora and fauna and our local farming economy, plus the difficulties in destroying this particular cactus and the adverse effect of non-complying land owners on the eradication plan.
A huge thank you to all the hardworking TCCG committee members for organizing and presenting a very informative workshop, especially our President Ian Grenda, who the following day also drove all the way to Towong to give a similar presentation to land managers and owners in North East Victoria.
If you’d like to learn how to most effectively kill Wheel Cactus plants, please join us at our next Wheel Cactus Field Day on Sunday 31st May, at a property overlooking Cairn Curran Reservoir. To get there, follow the main road to Baringhup, turn off to the reservoir and as you approach the Yacht Club, turn left again along the road around the water’s edge. The route will be well signposted from the turnoff to Baringhup. The morning’s activities begin at 10:30am and end with an enjoyable free BBQ lunch and friendly chat. If you have any queries please contact Ian on 0412 015 807 or contact the committee via our website at www.cactuswarriors.org
