As part of Volunteer Week, the Tarrangower Cactus Control Group, known locally as the Cactus Warriors, is recognising the vital role of its volunteers and inviting others to get involved. Their contribution is practical, ongoing and deeply appreciated by the wider community.
Guided by a committee of seven dedicated and passionate members, the group is supported by a strong network of community volunteers who contribute their time to controlling Wheel Cactus. This noxious weed is highly invasive and has spread across thousands of hectares in Maldon, Baringhup, Nuggetty and Sandy Creek, including the much-loved Maldon Historic Reserve. Our volunteers play an essential role in protecting both the natural environment and local agricultural land.
This year’s Volunteer Week theme, “Your Year to Volunteer”, is a timely reminder that new participants are always welcome. Opportunities exist at all levels, from joining the committee to working independently as a ‘lone cactus warrior’. Maybe you like walking in the bush and find outliers, or want to help a neighbour control their infestation, we have equipment available for loan. Experienced members can set you up, including demonstrations of manual removal and herbicide injection techniques.
The group is also seeking assistance with short term projects such as producing brief videos for its website, and welcomes community members with relevant skills to get involved.
